Don’t Get Me to the Church on Time

To tie the knot or not to wed? That is the query. It ne’er had been the query. It was ‘When to marry?’ not ‘why to marry’. For a long time women were expected and expected themselves to obtain a spouse young, hook up and set up home with kids and a furry friend, and commit their days to arranging a well run house. Perchance because ladies have been loosed from what were once their orthodox roles, that marriage is no longer as important and without doubt not the only road to venture along. In fact many people- both men and women- categorically hate the idea of marriage, and can’t envisage looking into a loved one’s face and promising without compromise to spend the remaider of their lives with them until someone dies. In many ways it’s sad, because weddings can be such joyous events- especially when they feature a lovely wedding dress and sky lanterns. But, calamitous marriages can be devastating, financially and emotionally damaging, and the most lonely things ever. Though being in a ill-starred partnership is also hugely isolating, somehow with the marriage stamp, it’s even worse. Friends and family have certain expectations of a couple when they are officially married and have purportedly spent so much dosh on their wedding day. They are required to be happy or to at least try their darndest to be so. As a result of this perceived outside pressure, many married couples feel they have to put on a front and obscure their actual attitudes. The reason why there were a greater amount marriages or why marriages lasted a few generations ago is because couples had no choice but to keep ploughing on with their relationship. This is better in some ways, but in others, it is very damaging. Yes there were a greater number of , but there were also many more desperately painful ones.
