Digital Britain Promises Need to be Backed by Actions, Says CRC
According to a new report the government’s promise of providing 2Mb broadband for all isn’t enough as a lot of additional steps need to be taken to provide a decent broadband connection to rural areas.
The report titled ‘Mind the Gap - Digital England, a rural perspective’, which was released by the Commission for Rural Communities has recommended specific actions that need to be taken to provide broadband access to rural areas. Amongst the number of suggestions there is also an emphasis on improving the community-based broadband schemes.
The Communication for Rural Communities report also states that merely assuring of 2Mb connections across the UK by 2012 alone will not do much good. A spokesman stated that there is also a chance that people may have much greater expectation from the government than just a 2Mb promise.
Presently there exist more than 40 community broadband schemes across the country with an overall coordinating agency called The Independent Networks Co-operative Association representing them - click for info on UK broadband providers.
Digital Britain’s suggestion of a ‘broadband tax‘ to the tune of 50p per month to fund improvements in the broadband infrastructure also seem to have hit a roadblock due to apprehensions put forward by many including the CRC report, which has cast doubts on whether this scheme can provide adequate funding for the implementation of the plan.
