Mobile Broadband - When is it Rude to Browse?

Mobile broadband services and smart phones have made bulky desktops and tangled wires a thing of the past, where Internet connectivity is concerned. With speedy, reliable and trustworthy Internet connection readily available on mobiles, users are increasingly free to browse at all hours from any location. As browsing increasingly becomes a public activity, there is also a need for some etiquette to be followed here.

Intel, the chip manufacturer attempted to find out what the Americans thought of etiquette in the use of mobiles through a survey, which was conducted on its behalf by Harris Interactive Research. In the report titled, “Intel Holiday Mobile Etiquette” the ‘online adult Americans’ were polled on their feelings about the use of mobiles in public.

About 80percent of the respondents agreed that mobile use should be paired with good etiquette. An even greater 87percent thought that mobiles should definitely not be used in sacred places like churches. Nearly 67percent said mobile use in company was not called for. Almost 60percent did not appreciate their dates using their mobiles. Etiquette at the dinner table barred mobile use according to over half the respondents. However, the survey also revealed that almost three quarters had no objections to quick trips to the restroom to check mail.

While the majority of the people reacted predictably to the survey, the minority threw in the surprise when they said they had no problems with browsing during dinner or using phones in the church.

If you haven’t yet joined the ranks of mobile internet users, take a look at mobile broadband pay as you go, however how you choose to use the mobile internet is a choice for the user; my personal experience of browsing on my mobile during a date did not go down a treat!
