Work Stress Causes Behavioural Problems
A new problem called executive derailment has made its presence felt in the recession hit industry. The main reason behind the rise of this problem is acute mental stress at workplace. According to Dr Alan Bourne, many leaders are not endowed with a strong personality that can help in withstanding work pressure. In such cases, they start behaving in a strange manner that ultimately results in loss of revenue for the organisation.
A research conducted by Talent Q, a company engaged in people assessment, has presented a detailed picture of this growing menace in the industry. The company conducted a survey among 14,000 employees in the
Men are more prone to show signs of over confidence and women become more hypersensitive and over dependent in times of crisis. Further, the type of work decides the nature of derailment. Employees in the Human Resource dept. suffer from certain eccentricities, production staff is plagued with the feeling of isolation while the legal fraternity suffer from over dependence.
Dr Alan Bourne, the director of Talent Q, thinks that the present-day leaders have the ability to lead on the basis of certain dominant traits which are however insufficient to face difficulties in life. Hence, the leaders show signs of behavioural aberrations which may bring damage to the organisation in the form of cancelled orders or missed deadlines.
Dr Bourne advocates the adoption of a better work stress system where people without adequate mental strength should not be placed in positions of responsibility. Incapable leaders may lead to a demotivated work force that will affect productivity. This situation can be tackled by identifying the problem at an individual level and encouraging leaders to participate in counselling sessions and personality development courses.
