Information You Need to Know about Botox Therapy
Botulinum medicine (shortened to BoTox) is rapidly becoming popular amongst Sydney’s fashionable crowd and now it has become a grooming necessity for those in the city.
Even so I am often stunned by the stories surrounding this procedure. To follow are a selection of the myths that we encounter day in day out in Star Cosmetic Medicine, where I practise as a physician.
Myth Number 1: I will lose my facial expressions!
Below the skin of the face are approximately 60 muscles. They ordinarily perform harmoniously, however from continued movement lines can begin to form. When surplus BoTox has been injected the musculature which are responsible for the expression of emotions can occasionally become a little less taut. The amount injected by most physicians will result in you seeming less tired, but still you will maintain your natural expression.
Indeed a carefully measured dosage of BoTox in the right place means one should get a reduction in the wrinkles without any compromise in facial expression.
Myth Number 2: Botulinum is a poisonous substance!
This to some extent is right. Its pharmaceutical name is Botulinum Toxin Type A. Too great a quantity can result in loss of muscle tone and may even make you very ill.
But to help us understand the bigger picture: a famous pharmacist’s saying states that ‘everything is a poison - it all depends on the dose’. All drugs might make a person really sick in large dosages. Water can be fatal if too much is taken.
Myth Number 3: It will sting!
In our clinic Star Cosmetic Medicine the doctor only uses a needle finer than a hair. Quite a few people have said that the shots are not as painful as being bitten by a mosquito. It is definitely not as traumatic as a procedure like a vaccination.
Myth Number 4: My face will be numb!
False. BoTox targets the junction between the nerve and the facial muscle, not sensate nerves. Only the ability to relax muscles is affected by BoTox.
Myth Number 5. You need to keep getting BoTox or you will wrinkle faster than ever!
Once More this is just wrong.
A set of injections will last about three months. Any further injections after the initial one should last a little longer. The wrinkles will slowly reappear as the muscle regains its strength. However they will certainly be no more noticeable than when you began.

Even should you don’t have BoTox injections ever again - any wrinkles should be smoother than if you had not undergone the procedure. This is chiefly because your skin has had a ‘wrinkle holiday’ for a few months.
