How to Win Friends and Influence People Quickly and Easily

Dale Carnegie famously pointed out that you can make more friends in two months by becoming interested in other people than you can in two years by trying to get other people interested in you.

Although Dale Carnegie died in 1955, his work in personal development lives on. His classic book, How to Win Friends and Influence People was first published in 1937 and is considered the grandfather of all ‘people skill’ books since then.

Because of his great understanding of human nature, his books and fundamental teachings are just as popular today. In fact, the title of his book is so widely used as a phrase, that some people who say it that may not even know where the phrase ‘how to win friends and influence people’ comes from.

Here are his six principles in making people like you:

1. Become genuinely interested in other people.

I think we’ve all met someone that pretend to be interested in you but you can sense that they really aren’t. There doesn’t seem to be anything genuine about these types of people. We tend to label them ‘phoney.’ This is probably one case where fake it until you make won’t work. So, how do you become genuinely interested in other people? You’ll want to ask them questions. Learn what they do, what they like. Everyone likes to talk about him or herself. Get them to talk about their dreams!

2. Smile.

Not much to add, here. When you walk into a room with a smile on your face, you might as well be carrying a people magnet.

3. Use a person’s name.

Remember that a person’s name is to that person the sweetest and most important sound in any language. Just like in the old romantic movies: “Oh, John… John!” “Oh, Mary, dear Mary!”

4. Be a good listener.

Encourage others to talk about themselves. When you do this with a sincere and genuine interest in the other person you cannot fail to encourage that person to feel appreciated and valued. This is a key trait of anyone who has mastered people skills.

5. Talk in terms of the other person’s interests.

Again, this principle stresses making time to listen to others to find out what is of interest to them. Let their interests guide the direction of the conversation and you will enjoy a solid rapport that encourages friendship.

6. Make the other person feel important - and do it sincerely.

This cannot be faked for long. Look for the good in others and respect other viewpoints, beliefs and lifestyles. Even ones that do not make sense to you. This flexibility is important if you are to respect the other person.

His last three points, tie into the first. How to win friends and influence people is a book that reminds us that anything you do from a place of fellowship will have a good result. He uses this fable to prove his point:

The sun and the wind were arguing about who was the strongest. The wind pointed at an old man. The wind said that he’d prove his strength by getting the man to remove his coat. He blew and howled and blew some more.

The old man clung to his coat more than ever. When the wind finally gave up, the sun came out from behind a cloud and shone brightly. Soon the man was wiping his forehead and removing his coat.

Call Philippines as Clear as the Pearl of the Orient Seas

Most Filipinos would love to hear from their relatives or friends from the US. Who won’t? There’s just so much to tell and burning the lines would be one helluvah understatement if you are to make an international call to the Philippines. This is because the Philippines is one of the most eventful places in the world right now. See the news to prove this.

Placing an international call could be a very wallet-pinching endeavor. But this should not always be the case. There are numerous ways to make a long distance call, especially if the destination of your call is the Pearl of the Orient, the Philippines.

Here is a rundown of suggestions on how to make that international call to the Philippines without shelling out much of your hard-earned dollars.

1. Be careful when buying call cards.

Several prepaid phone cards have hidden charges. There could be a connection fee that could be almost tantamount to getting ripped off especially when the card buyer makes a call and either the call is routed to a voice mailbox or to an answering machine. Connection fee deduction is automatically done even when the caller did not say anything yet.

Other phone card hidden charges include service fee, maintenance fee, access number and long talking fee. The expiration date should also be checked.

2. Know what type of phone will receive your call.

It won’t be advisable to make a long distance call to any mobile device. This is because most of overseas carriers implement the “calling party pays” system. The tariff rate of an international wireless phone could be a lot higher compared to a call made to a land-line in the same country.

3. Say no to a telephone operator.

When you choose to be assisted by a telephone operator when placing an international call, you choose to pay considerably more. Whenever possible opt to use a dial-around service or dial direct.

4. Sign up to a prepaid long distance plan.

Various carriers offer this kind of service to those who frequently place long distance calls. Opt for those with flexible programs. These plans work like phone cards but do not have fees and charges associated with prepaid phone cards. They usually have very low domestic and international rates 24/7 and call quality is usually excellent. One more thing about these prepaid plans is the convenience of being able to use them when placing calls from any telephones be it cell phones or public phones.

5. Calling during non-business days or off-peak time will help you save.

Make the most out of these privileges by checking on what your carrier offers. Just make sure that it won’t be too much of an inconvenience to the recipient of your call.

6. Bad connections should be noted.

Bad connections happen and the Philippines is not an exception to this nuisance. When this happens, take note of the time and the number you called. Prepaid calling cards rarely gives you credit for bad connections. But if you made an international call using a standard long distance carrier, or prepaid long distance plans, better check if you could be given credit for that call. They always do.

It would help if you print this info to be always reminded of the Do’s and Don’t’s when it comes to making an international call.

With these simple tips, you don’t have to worry when your phone bill arrives.

Finally, here’s the step-by-step process in calling the Philippines.

a. Dial 011, which is the international code

b. Then, key in the Philippines’ country code, which is 63.

c. Now, dial the city area code where your your wife and kids are.

Here are the major cities in the Philippines with their respective city area codes:

Angeles Luzon - 455

Bacolod - 34

Baguio - 74

Cebu - 32

Clarkfield, Pampanga - 45

Dagupan, Pangasinan - 75

Davao - 82

Iloilo - 33

Laguna Province - 49562

Lucena, Luzon - 42

Makati, Luzon - 2

Manila - 2

Ozamiz City - 88

San Fernando, Pampanga - 45

San Fernando, La Union - 72

San Pablo - 49

Subic, Zambales - 47

Tarlac - 452

Tarlac Province - 45

Zamboanga - 62

d. Finally, dial the remaining digits.

Also, don’t forget to greet your Filipino friend using her native lingo. “Kumusta”, pronounced as “cooh-moose-TAH” surely will never fail to make her smile.

Thought Transfer Communication

Eventually humans will be able to communicate by thought, through computers, which will be available to everyone probably within a couple of decades. Currently the people who can currently communicate by thought with powers of ESP are limited in their abilities. These strong minds are rare in their numbers and are about the only human beings with a chance of thought transfer. It is quite possible that all humans once had these abilities to a much larger degree but over the tens of thousands of years we lost that ability as the civilizations grew.

There are many interesting books on this with documentations of humans with pets such as dogs, cats, ferrets and parrots. Parents and children often have such mind thought transfer abilities, when a baby needs mothers-milk or a child is in trouble and needs help. Couples who have been married a long time often say they can know what the other is thinking, either because they have become closer on their brain wave frequencies or have adapted to the other persons brain activity. But along with marriages and communication, without thoughts being shared and mutual respect of those thoughts a marriage will drift apart.

Thought transfer technologies will increase long distance friendships and help families and groups remain close. Such a synergy will assist small and large groups move their endeavors forward. Just like mobile cell phones helped small businesses improve efficiency and today help keep friends and family in touch with each other. Think on this.

How To Make Your Site RSS User-Friendly

Despite all the hype and fuss surrounding RSS recently, for the majority of mainstream Internet users, RSS still remains a mysterious orange button sitting on your web site. They are totally unaware of this new method of syndicating information on the web.

This is not necessarily bad news!

For many Internet users are enjoying the benefits of RSS while remaining totally clueless as to its function or how it works. Programs like ‘MyYahoo’ and the RSS empowered Firefox Browser are letting surfers access RSS and enjoy its major benefits without having any or no knowledge of it.

In the very near future when Microsoft introduces its new RSS powered Longhorn Browser and operating system - this situation will hopefully continue. Internet users should be able to enjoy all the benefits of RSS without having to know what it is!

Users don’t have to know ‘DOS’ or even ‘HTML’ to enjoy the full benefits of the Internet and their computers. RSS should fall into this same category. It would quickly bring RSS into the mainstream without having to overcome a long learning curve.

However, until RSS is blended seamlessly into web sites and browsers, there remains one major problem with RSS. Most browsers can’t access the RSS feed directly. When many surfers click that little orange button on your site - they get a jumbled code or worst, their browser freezes. Many will depart your site scratching their heads or saying a few choice words in the direction of your site. Not a pleasant situation for anyone.

At the heart of the problem, an RSS Feed must be accessed by aggregators or an RSS feed (news) reader like Newsgator or an RSS empowered browser like Firefox which has a ‘Live Bookmark’ feature that basically updates your bookmarks or feeds with RSS. A direct link to an RSS feed just won’t work with most browsers.

Webmasters must fix this problem. You must fix this problem. You must make your site RSS User-Friendly. You should realize by now, every web site visitor counts. Besides, its just good net etiquette.

Here are some simple solutions to help alleviate this problem and make your site more RSS-Friendly:

1. Don’t just place the orange RSS button on your site. Always include a link ‘What is This?’ beside it. Have this link leading to a page explaining what RSS is and how your visitors can access and use it. This has a two-fold benefit; visitors who are familiar with RSS will know how to use the button, visitors who are in the dark can get a quick education in RSS 101! Here’s an example I have on my site. http://www.bizwaremagic.com/What_Is_RSS.htm

You are welcome to use this page on your site if you’re pressed for time. Just copy it and upload it to your site or link directly to it. It will do in a pinch!

2. As mentioned before some browsers can Automatically discover or Access your RSS feed. The Firefox Browser is a prime example. To facilitate or aid in this AutoDiscovery process place a simple code in the HEAD section of your webpage’s HTML code:

(link rel=”alternate” type=”application/rss+xml” title=”RSS” href=”http://www.bizwaremagic.com/blog/atom.xml” /)

Just don’t forget to replace the ( and ) characters with < and > in your web page code. Also, place in your OWN feed!

3. Of course, many webmasters use many RSS buttons on their site to guide their visitors in the right direction. For example, placing a ‘MyYahoo’ button will make it easier for visitors using that program to access your RSS feeds. Bloglines and MyMSN buttons are other examples. Some webmasters even design their OWN RSS button for their sites. Just remember to place your ‘What is This?’ link beside it.

4. However, if your visitor is not using an aggregator or RSS equipped browser - they will still get the jumbled code that will be puzzling to them. One way around this problem is to use a free service from Feedburner.com and have your RSS Feed transformed or presented so that if can be read in your visitor’s browser. Instead of linking your orange button directly to your RSS feed, use the Free link from Feedburner in its place. Your web site visitors will then be able to read your feeds but they will also still be able to subscribe to your RSS feed.

More information on what this looks like here: http://feeds.feedburner.com/BurnThisRSS2

5. Perhaps, using the same system above, an easier and friendlier solution to use is a Headline Animator from Feedburner. This will display your RSS feed headlines on your site in a very User-Friendly way. Anyone wanting to subscribe to your feed can do so by clicking this Headline Animator. It will also provide your visitors with information and headlines about your feed’s content. Plus, it will give them a real sampling of your feed. It will immediately make your website more RSS-Friendly.

RSS is the wave of the future. It will play an ever increasing role in how information is exchanged on the web. Make sure your site is RSS User-Friendly so that you can take full advantage this new technology. Make sure your site is a pleasant RSS experience for all your visitors, it will not only put your site in a more favorable light, but it will also make your site more competitive in a very competitive world.

So for your visitor’s benefit and your own, make your site RSS-Friendly right now. Don’t delay. Just do it. Your visitors will thank you in more ways than one.

Sensational new evidence proving origins of Teddy Boys

Sensational cover up exposed, original Teddy Boys
were really bears all the time.

Thanks to this exclusive Stiffsteiffs exposé,
Teddy Boys make their comeback.

Everyone thinks rock and roll kicked off Teddy Boys,
but the very name should give you a clue.

This pair, Phil and Don, are tough Teddy Boys.
They have teddy tattoos, and they are the ORIGINAL
Teddy Boys, not the later imitations.

Johnny Cash, the original bear, never goes anywhere without
his trusty guitar. He stands no messing about.

The one and only original Jerry Lee, of course a
Teddy Bear Teddy Boy, this original picture proves
it beyond any doubt.

The original Elvis. Elvis Bear.
These suppressed pictures finally expose
one of the greatest cover ups in history.

The original Dolly. Nothing like the hillbilly
later imitation thrust at an unsuspecting public.

The real Adam Faith above, although discovered
near bow bells, hes nothing like what they would
have had you believe.

The real Little Richard, a quiet shy bear often
sitting alone when not freaking out on stage,
yet they would have you believe he was not really
a bear at all. These are the true Teddy Boys,
the name is the real giveaway.

However Julian and Sandy were always kept
a bit quiet, even before the big con, they arent
your usual Teddy Boys.

Billy Fury, as youve never seen him before,
the English Teddy answer to Elvis bear.
Seen here its obvious he was a teddy bear,
no question.

Look at this picture and dispel all doubts
this is how real Teddy Boy gangs looked,
not the pale imitations that followed.
These intimidate by a mere glance, and
these were taken before they started
drinking, and bear jiving.

Can you imagine this is not the godfather of
all rock and roll, Teddy Boy supreme
yes, Chuck “cool” Berry.

look at these later imitations below and judge for yourself.

I rest my case, the top ones are incontrovertibly true
pictures showing the real Teddy Boys were,
originally, actually Teddy Bears, whereas these
are obviously doctored digital reproductions.

There was even a group called the Teddy Bears.

Elvis sang I just want to be your teddy bear, not
I just want to be your rock and roll dude.

These coded messages tell the true incredible
story behind the myths, of which even Von Daniken
would be proud,

Teddy Boys were originally Teddy Bears.

Are You Too Old to Pump Iron?

Are you too old for weight lifting? Will weight lifting help
you stay and look younger? The answer to the first question is
no and to the second is a resounding yes. Weight lifting will
help both men and women stay fit and supple and might even help
you look younger. And, no matter what your age, you’re not too
old to start.

In 1982, Dr.Walter Bortz, writing in The Journal of the American Medical Association, stated that a number of the physical
changes we undergo as we age, such as loss of muscle tone,
organ deterioration, and osteoporosis are “indistinguishable
whether caused by age or inactivity.” He believed that exercise
could delay many of the diseases associated with aging, adding
“at least a portion of the changes commonly attributed to aging
are in reality caused by disuse and, as such, subject to
correction”.

As we age, we lose bone density and muscle mass. We get stiff
and our joints creak. Instead of using our body, we “rest” it
even more, starting a very dangerous downward spiral. The
synovial fluid dries up, the tendons become brittle, the sinews
grow weak. It hurts to move, so we don’t.

More recently Dr Henry Lodge and Chris Cowley published a new
book on this theme, “Younger Next Year: A Guide to Living Like
50 Until You’re 80 and Beyond”. The premise of this book is that weight lifting will help reverse the loss of both bone density and muscle mass that begins to take place as we get older. And they’re not talking about light weights, but rather big heavy weights.

In July 1983, Terry Todd wrote in Sports Illustrated that “Anyone who has spent much time in what is sometimes called the “Iron Game” has, of course, seen weight trainers over 40 whose physiques were…surprisingly youthful. Apparently there is something about the act of regularly stressing your body with heavy exercise that gives it the wherewithal to resist the visual manifestations of advancing age…research in this area suggests that men and women of middle age
will respond to systemic progressive resistance with weights by
becoming more powerful and more flexible, with more endurance and less fat.”

In 2003, the Centers for Disease Control reported that strength
training “can be very powerful in reducing the signs and symptoms of numerous diseases and chronic conditions, among them:arthritis, diabetes, osteoporosis, obesity, back pain and depression.”

Strength training will also increase your flexibility and balance, which decreases the likelihood and severity of falls. One study in New Zealand in women 80 years of age and older showed a 40% reduction in falls with simple strength and balance training.

I don’t agree that we need to undertake heavy weight training to see substantial benefits.

The American College of Sports Medicine strength training
guidelines say we should start with at least two days a week of
any type of resistance exercise by doing 8 to 10 different exercises and doing 8 to 12 repetitions per day. A repetition is how many times you lift the weight or do the exercise.

So start off with a weight that you can lift correctly for at least 8 reps, even if it’s only 2 to 5 pounds. Rest between each set of repetitions and between each exercise. If you can’t make it to 8 reps during the first few tries, don’t give up. Do as much as you can do. You’ll be suprised at how soon you will feel like you need to add a bit more weight.

But the goal is not to become a body builder, but rather to restore your muscle tone and joint movement. You can gradually work your way up to heavier weights if you desire, but you will obtain the best benefit by avoiding injury and sticking to the program - lifting weights every two or three days.

An excellent resource on this subject is Getting Stronger: Weight Training for Men and Women by Bill Pearl and Gary Moran, Ph.D. I have the edition that came out in 1986. A newer one is now available. I have referred to it constantly over the last 19 years.

The book gives you tips and pointers on how to set up a strength training regime. There are illustrations of every exercise with step by step instructions on how to do them properly.

You can either learn beginning to advanced body building, sports fitness routines to help you do better in 22 different sports, exercises to help prevent injuries at work or just the principles of general conditioning and strength training.

And you don’t need any fancy equipment to get going. Almost all the exercises use cheap dumbbells and weights that are available in just about every sporting goods store. All in all, this is a very comprehensive book on weight training and is especially helpful to those of us who have never lifted weights before.

If you have any disease, injury or physical disability, consult the doctor who has been treating you before undertaking these exercises. Follow his advice on how to get started and do not strength train if he says not to.

Start off slowly with light weights. Follow the diagrams in the book to make sure you’re positioning your body correctly to avoid injury and obtain the best result from your workout.

After several weeks, you will be well on your way to improving your appearance, physique and general attitude toward life, while doing wonders for you internal organs and maybe even fighting off disease.

“Use it or lose it” applies to just about every part of your body. Don’t “lose it” because of inactivity and disuse.

This article is for informational purposes only. It does not purport to offer medical advice. Consult a qualified physician before undertaking any exercise program.

Don’t Let The Good Times Bury You

It is vital to get rid of debt while things are
going well. Yet the opposite is usually the
case. Human nature is such that when we
find ourselves living in good times, we let
down our defenses. With our lives going
great we seem to make the worst
decisions. It’s not hard to understand why
this happens. We believe things will always
be better in the future, “When I’m done
with school, When I get a better paying
job, I’m sure I will get that promotion.”

With this attitude, that extra lump
sum of money, or the raise at work, is
used as a springboard to increase your
personal debt. After all you can now afford
better this, bigger that. You assume in
your linear view of life that tomorrow will
take care of everything. You don’t become
concerned with your debt load, until you
no longer can make the payments.

When you begin to feel the squeeze of
debt, you want some quick fix to get you
out of trouble. Unfortunately there are no
quick fixes for debt that will leave you (or
your credit report) unscarred.

But why should it be any different from
other areas of your life? If you know a
food will give you heartburn you take a
pill and, “presto,” you may eat any thing
you like. If you can’t find time to exercise,
just take a pill and watch those pounds
melt away.

The economy is built on the same “I want
it now,” principle. If you want an item,
you just whip out the plastic. You need it
now. You will figure out later how to pay
for it. When your plastic can take no more,
you want out of debt in an easy way. You
begin looking for the magic pill.
Unfortunately the drugstore closed a long
time ago.

A woman, who I know casually, had no
problem taking on more debt because she
saw herself able to handle the extra
payments. She reasoned, if everything
remained the same she could handle the
drain on her income. So she bought some
expensive gift items on her cards and
began making the monthly payments.

She found out rather quickly she could not
see into the future very well. Her car gave
out on her. The repairs exceeded the value
of the car. She needed one for work, so
she bought another.

The new payment wiped out the tiny
cushion she had each month and also made
it impossible to pay on her credit cards and
store accounts. Today she finds herself
hounded by her creditors and unable to
pay them anything.

What she should have done, and what you
should do, is pay off your debt while you
can and not take on any more. Whatever
extra you have each month should be
applied toward getting out of debt in a
systematic way. Until you are debt free,
you should order your life to make it a top
priority.

Life’s pressures are more easily handled
without money worries dogging you. Then
when those big promotions, with those big
raises come along, you will be trained to
put some aside. And without debt to take
care of, you can. The goods times then,
truly, will be the good times.

The 5 Most Common Local Phone Bill Errors

After over 100 years of practice, telephone companies still cannot seem to get it right. In a study of clients over a five-year period, TelCon Associates found that 77.4% were incorrectly charged on one or more of their telecom bills. The bulk of these errors were uncovered primarily for local and intralata services.

While the percentage of errors is high, billing errors usually account for only a small portion of total savings during telecommunications audits.

Nevertheless, it is a good idea to be familiar with the most common errors that will appear on your local telephone bills. Keep in mind that errors may take the form of “overbilling” and/or “underbilling”.

Routine examination of your local phone bills will, sooner or later, turn up the one or more of the following most common types of errors:

#1 - Intermittent Errors

Intermittent errors are just as the name implies - they appear on a non-regular basis. This type of error is usually associated with the “Other Charges and Credits” pages of the phone bill. Examples of intermittent errors may include:

Other charges and credits for installation or changes are often found to be incorrect, especially for services provided under many negotiated deals or contracts.

Incorrect applications for refunds or credit adjustments is another typical intermittent error. Surprisingly, you may find this error soon after your carrier representative has agreed to the refund or credit!

Charges for uncompleted calls are sometimes found on billings from two types of vendors-resellers using feature group A connections to carrier central offices, and vendors that are reselling service from a virtual private network.

Facility malfunctions can result in you being charged for lines that are not working resulting in higher charges for usage forced onto other lines or services.

#2 - Recurring Errors

Recurring errors are the result of incorrect information and data in the vendors’ customer service records. These types of errors can be very costly simply because they appear each and every month until they are corrected.

Examples may include: inventory discrepancies, contract discrepancies, differences in tariff or rating regarding grade of service, mileage charges, enhancements, etc.

Recurring errors are not as easily uncovered as are intermittent errors. This type of error can only be corrected through a thorough audit of customer service records. A routine examination of phone bills will not reveal all recurring errors.

#3 - Tax Errors

Tax errors are most commonly associated with exemptions or incorrect taxing districts. When facilities are taxed incorrectly, the associated usage charges may also be taxed incorrectly. Examples of tax errors may include:

-Taxes being collected after exemption has been filed (a copy of the applicable exemption certificate or earlier exempt billing will verify the overbilling)
-Exempt account without authorization
-Taxes applied for wrong jurisdiction
-Taxes applied despite statutes or rulings exempting them

#4 - Metering and Database Errors

These types of errors are commonly associated with local and long-distance calling charges. They can occur through metering malfunctions or clerical transcription errors. Examples include:

-Double metering (easy to identify since each call is shown twice and in complete detail)
-Charges for incomplete calls .
-Usage from a different subscriber (another easily identifiable error-charge for another individual’s line number will appear on carrier bill)

#5 - Telecom Agent Errors

Agent errors continue to be a problem as more and more agents are accepting either partial or end-to-end responsibility for service segments provided by vendors.

Agent misfeasance occurs when a supplier orders or assumes responsibility for service segments provided by several different carriers or vendors, then fails to exercise responsibility for those services. Examples may include:

-Local lines ordered and installed by equipment vendor or IXC. (In the event those lines are no longer needed, the agent is nowhere to be found to cancel the unused lines and services!)
-Excessive or sub-optimum facilities installed
-Promises of credits or changes that fail to materialize

Telecom billing errors will never disappear. However, even a little knowledge in what kinds of errors to look for can go a long way in reducing telecom expenses.

Fun Is Different for Us All

We all have different ways to have fun. Some of us have fun just about all of the time, while others only have fun every so often. What is fun is determined by what you think is fun, and it is made up in your mind. Many of us look at work as not fun, while a few love it and working is the most fun thing to do in the world. How can this be? It is a choice to view work as either fun or not fun. There are ways to do what you love to do, and you should pick work that you love to do so that you can have fun each and every day. Fun is very subjective and it is just so different for each of us. If we make sure that we spend time doing the things that we love our lives will be better and those who are closest to us will be better off. We influence those around us, and if we are not having fun and are upset, this can not make their lives any better, it will make it worse, and this is not what we want. Living a healthy lifestyle is important to help us view the things that we do as being fun. If we are living healthy then our minds can work in a natural state. You can take the natural supplement Acceletrim to help improve your mood. Being in a good mood can help you view your activities as fun and take away a lot of the stresses that we associate with what we do.
